Gary Griffiths, Debut

The stunning début album by Welsh Baritone Gary Griffiths, accompanied by the highly acclaimed pianist Caradog Williams. With a host of popular classics from the world of opera and song, Gary is joined by world-class soprano Rebecca Evans, cellist Steffan Morris, the Hywel Girls’ Choir and Hywel Boys Singers and the mighty Pontarddulais Male Voice Choir.

Described by The Times as a ‘Stand out Star’, Cardiff Singer of the World finalist, Gary Griffiths is at the beginning of a glittering, international operatic career.

The young Welsh baritone was born in Pembrey, Carmarthenshire and attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he won the prestigious Gold Medal. Upon leaving college he joined the Welsh National Opera debuting to critical acclaim as Guglielmo in Cosi fan Tutte. Other roles with the WNO include Schaunard (La Boheme), Masetto (Don Giovanni) and Claudio (Beatrice & Benedict). In 2013 he made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Oman singing Cecil (Maria Stuarda). He is now establishing an international career; roles include Figaro in New Zealand and Count Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro) at Wiesbaden State Opera, Germany. Concert highlights include Les Troyens (Berlioz) with the London Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev at the Barbican Hall, Mozart Requiem with the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera under Christoph Poppen at St David’s Hall and Faure Requiem with the RTE Orchestra at Dublin’s National Concert Hall. A committed recitalist he has appeared at the Wigmore Hall with Sir Thomas Allen, Bridgewater Hall with Alice Turner and the Oxford Lieder Festival with Sholto Kynoch. Future recordings include Mendelssohn Songs with Malcolm Martineau.

Yn enedigol o Ben-bre, Sir Gaerfyrddin, aeth ymlaen i astudio yn y Guildhall School of Music and Drama ac yma fe dderbyniodd wobr hynod bwysig ‘Y Fedal Aur’ (Gold Medal).

Ymunodd a chwmni Opera Cymru (WNO) gan chwarae ei rôl gyntaf fel Guglielmo yn Cosi fan Tutte, a hynny’n hynod llwyddianus. Parhaodd gyda’r cwmni i chwarae rhannau fel Schaunard (La Boheme), Masetto (Don Giovanni) a Claudio (Beatrice & Benedict) ac yn 2013 fe berfformiodd yn Nhy Opera Brenhinol Oman am y tro cyntaf gan chwarae rhan Cecil yn Maria Stuarda.

Mae nawr yn prysur gychwyn ar yrfa rhyngwladol; rhannau yn cynnwys Figaro yn Seland Newydd a rhan Count Almaviva (hefyd o Le Nozze di Figaro) gyda Wiesbaden State Opera, Yr Almaen. Mae’n edrych ymlaen yn eiddgar at y dyfodol agos i gael perfformio yn Les Troyens gan Berlioz gyda Cherddorfa Symffonig Llundain a Valery Gergiev yn Neuadd y Barbican, hefyd y Requiem gan Mozart gyda cerddorfa Cwmni Opera Cymru dan arweiniad Christoph Poppen yn Neuadd Dewi Sant, Caerdydd a hefyd y Rquiem gan Faure gyda cerddorfa RTE yn Neuadd Gyngerdd Dulyn. Yn ddatgeinydd rheolaidd, mae Gary wedi perfformio yn Neuadd Wigmor gyda Sir Thomas Allen, Neuadd Bridgewater gyda Alice Turner ac yng Ngwyl Lieder Rhydychen gyda Sholto Kynoch. Bydd yn recordio Mendelssohn Songs gyda Malcolm Martineau yn fuan.
