Dathlu Tywysogion Cymru

Author: Elin Meek.

A fun-packed fully illustrated book for children (and families) presenting all matters relating to Welsh Princes - their history, dates and celebrations, traditions, myths, poems and activities. Includes over a hundred illustrations: photographs, pictures, maps and diagrams.

Pride, romance and tumultuous times. Those are some of the thoughts and images that spring to mind when we recall the history of Wales and the Welsh princes, in particular. As we keep faith with our Welsh identity, living as we do under the shadow and influence of England and the English language, we can trace the lives of the heroes and leaders of our country, thanks to Elin Meek’s latest book, Celebrating Welsh Princes.

The book, which is published in English and Welsh, introduces us to the wealth and excitement of the lives of the Welsh princes in a clear and informative manner. It’s a book that will appeal to children and young people of both primary and secondary school ages, and includes activities such as devising a coat of arms, discovering your family tree, making a catapult, keeping a diary like Geraldus Cambrensis and composing a song for your own national hero.
It’s a good read, full of colourful and interesting pictures, which includes historical facts and figures, important dates and celebrations, traditions and tales, poems and activities, all in the context of the Welsh princes. It contains over 100 full colour images, photographs, pictures, maps and diagrams.

The book starts with the history of Cunedda Wledig (a Welsh chieftain who lived sometime between 370 and 450 AD), then leads us to the lordship of Rhodri The Great, talks about the pioneering nature of Hywel The Good’s laws, recounts the story of Gwenllian, daughter of Gruffudd ap Cynan, Ifor Bach, Lord of Senghennydd, Lord Rhys ap Gruffudd, Llywelyn The Great, Llywelyn Our Last Leader, Owain Lawgoch (Red Hand) and Owain Glyndŵr. We also learn how names such as Jones, Bowen and Powell came into being; why bards and monks were so important to the Welsh princes, and why the Vikings failed to create an impression on Wales.

Elin Meek said, “This is the fourth book in the Festival Fun series and I had great pleasure researching and writing it. In an age when people pay a lot of attention to famous people and their lives, it’s good to look back and learn about our very own princes of the past. They were the celebrities of their day and, in contrast to today’s celebrities, the future of the nation depended on them. Indeed, were it not for them, the Welsh language wouldn’t be around today. I hope this book will go some way towards keeping their memory and achievements alive.”
